Country Star WARNER MACK Passes After Lengthy Illness 

Huge Loss to Country Music 

Nashville, TN— March 1, 2022 — The world of country music lost yet another great entertainer with the passing of Warner Mack, who passed at 1:20 am on March 1 after a lengthy illness. He was known for his many hit recordings beginning in the 1960s. 

Warner was born to Reverend Warner Hensley McPherson and Bessie Mae Smithson McPherson in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 5, 1935. In 1944, the family was moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where Warner spent the rest of his young years. He wrote his first song at the age of 13, “Is It Wrong For Loving You?”, when a young romance of his did not work out. That song later would be his biggest chart-topping hit, staying in the Billboard Top Ten for a total of 36 weeks and listed as one of the 30 greatest country songs ever written. 

A Long-Lasting and Successful Career 

Warner’s hits also included “The Bridge Washed Out”, “Talkin’ To The Wall”, “Sittin’ In An All Night Café”, “Drifting Apart”, “After The Lights Go Out”, and “It Takes A Lot Of Money.” At the age of 29 years old, his career was pretty much over when he was involved in a car accident, and was instructed by Decca/MCA Records producer Owen Bradley to record when he was still not able to due to the aftermath of the accident. It would be 15 years before he would be able to record again and return to traveling on the road. “I know first-hand life’s direction can change in the blink of an eye”, Warner said. 

Within the words of Warner’s songs, he has shown a deep love for God and country. He has recorded an album with his sister Willa Dean entitled, “Songs We Sang at Church and Home” which was Grammy nominated and continues to be a fan favorite even today. 

A Career of Firsts for Warner 

Warner Mack was the first country artist to record Coca Cola Commercials world-wide. Warner has also performed more radio shows for the Air Force than any other country artist. In a leading music industry magazine, Warner Mack was ranked #6 among all country singers. He has received numerous awards for his recording accomplishments and his songwriting. In 1991, he was inducted into the American Academy of Country Music Hall of Fame. His sound has been copied but never his style. Mel Tillis once said of Warner Mack, “There is only one Warner Mack. He just doesn’t hit bad notes and is a natural when it comes to singing.” 

Warner has had two recent number one hits on SoundClick.com, including “Bring Your Own Blues” and “Pray For Your Country.” 

Warner Mack’s arrangements are being handled by Woodbine Hickory Chapel Funeral Home located at 5852 Nolensville Pike in Nashville, TN.
